Why visit Belitung?

As surprising as it may seem, Belitung, the island known as the biggest mining conglomerate on earth, is one of the most stunning in all of Southeast Asia.

However, world-class beaches without the gridlock and crowds aren’t for everyone.
Who, after all, wants to spend their vacation on a deserted island where the only company they’ll have is the coconut water you drank from when it fell from the palm next to you?

The island is well-known and well-respected across Indonesia.
In fact, a famous movie of all time was filmed on the island. (No, not the one with Tom Hanks; that was a different island.) It was the most successful “Indonesian” movie, “Laskar Pelangi.”

Also, Ex-governor of Jakarta and local boy, Mr. Ahok, grew up in these parts.
Aside from quiet, tranquility, space, and isolation. There is also adequate infrastructure, gorgeous places to stay equipped with bathrooms, hot showers, the option to choose from a few fantastic eateries, and roads to drive on.
We get it. Paradise isn’t for everybody.

Besides, after a while, an island may get rather lonely. Even if you’re there with your other half, it’s beautiful yet lonely.

Still, we think desert islands to be excellent locations to stop, relax, and reflect before continuing on to the next location.
Try it for a week. We dare you.

Hotels in Belitung

More and more hotels are springing up all over the area to accommodate the soaring number of tourists. You’ll have plenty of options, from the cheap to the presidential suite. Tanjung Pandan is where most visitors to Belitung will choose to lay their heads for the night before venturing out to see the rest of the island.

Belitung Guide

Located in the Java Sea off the coast of eastern Sumatra, Indonesia, lies the island of Belitung.

There are beautiful white sand beaches with turquoise water only a 28-minute taxi ride from HAS Hanandjoeddin Airport, and if you have the time, you can explore more than 200 small remote islands in the area.

People dry fish on docks under wooden stilted Malay-style homes, a scene that reflects the cultural mix seen across Indonesia.

Balinese emigrants who formerly farmed pepper, who now also work as miners, and fishermen enrich the ethnic mix and make their home in Giri Jati, a gated enclave guarded by a few Hindu temples.

Belitung offers undamaged coral sites just offshore, perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving in addition to the more apparent beach activities like swimming and lounging on the white sand beaches.

The coast near North-East Belitung, famous for its many Chinese wrecks from various dynasties, including a wreck found offshore by a fisherman in 1998 brings in visitors from around the world.

Changsha ware ceramics and the largest single collection (60,000 pieces) of Tang Dynasty can both be seen at the Tanjung Pandan Museum (a former pottery pit from 1851).

Island hopping is your next best option if you become bored with beachcombing and discovering secret beaches and coves while wandering along the beach.
Belitung is surrounded by a number of smaller, deserted islands, including the well-known Pulau Lengkuas, all of which have lovely beaches, provide for picturesque backdrops with its stunning rock formations.

Tanjung Pandan’s historic downtown is a treat for window shoppers because of all the charming Dutch colonial houses.
The historic Dutch tin mining house complex is still kept up, as are most of the government buildings.

Also, another must-see is the dock and fish market which has lots of traditional Bugis fishing boats around.

There are a lot more interesting spots to check out, including tasty local dishes.
One may choose from a variety of cheap warung’s (eateries) in this town. Fresh fish and the unique pastries made in Belitung are definitely worth a taste.

It’s not hard to locate a place that serves ice cold beer. And Manggar’s coffee scene is unlike any other, and the city’s various cafes are packed with locals with a welcoming atmosphere in which to unwind and feel each others vibes. One of Manggar’s nicknames is “the City of a Thousand Coffee Shops.”

Good to Know

Getting to and around

H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin Airport is the main and only airport serving Belitung Island maybe 6 times a day.

Flying into Tanjung Pandan, the island’s center, is the most convenient route to reach the rest of Belitung.
Jakarta (CGK) and Kuala Lumpur (KUL) both provide nonstop flights to Bangka Belitung Airport (TJQ).

Belitung is roughly half the size of Bali, so you can go to any part of the island from Tanjung Pandan in less than two hours.

Public transit is inconvenient to locate on the island, therefore taxis or rented cars or motorbikes are the most practical means of getting about.

Employing the services of a competent private driver may be a cost-effective and relaxing way to move about. In addition, there are weekend packages that include an airport drop-off on the last morning of your trip.

If you’d rather sightsee on your own terms, a motorbike rental is a great option for less than IDR100k and includes having your bike ready for you when you land. Ojek (motorcycle taxi) are also an option.

Belitung Weather

Tropical & Hot

Belitung, like the rest of Indonesia, experiences warm temperatures all year and a yearly monsoon because of its tropical location Belitung is located in Indonesia, south of the equator, so the hottest months are April and December and the coolest months are June, July.

During the rainy season (October–March), heavy downpours may cause flooding on the roads and rough waves for boaters. Avoid taking a trip at this time if at all possible.

Prices - Great Value for money

You can stretch your hard-earned cash much farther in Belitung.

If you want to get cash, go to an ATM from BCA, BRI, or Bank Sumsel Babel. The ATMs from Bank Sumsel Babel are less likely to accept foreign cards, though. There are no money exchanges because there aren’t many international flights or foreign visitors. Before leaving Jakarta, you should change all of your foreign money into Rupiah.
