Morotai Guide

Morotai Island, part of the Maluku Islands, is among the northernmost of Indonesia’s archipelago.

The airport that is most convenient for travelers to and from Morotai is located on the neighboring island of Ternate. If you want to get to Daruba on Morotai, you’ll have to take a ferry from Tobelo on North Halmahera. The trip by sea usually lasts about two hours.

It is north of the larger island of Halmahera and has a number of great beaches and interesting places to dive.

In the south, Daruba is the biggest town. The Philippines are to the north of Morotai, and the Pacific Ocean is to the east.

The island’s population of 52,000 people has returned to its previous state as a peaceful tropical paradise.

Morotai was formerly a Japanese airport during WWII and a U.S. military station during the Allied invasion of the Philippines in 1945.

A few museums and underwater shipwrecks offer glimpses into WWII’s past.

Morotaian cuisine is primarily focused on seafood. Ikan Bakar Sambal Colo-colo, essentially a grilled fish with spicy seasonings, is one of the most well-liked.

Morotai’s native cuisine is renowned for its robust flavors, which include not only savory, hot, and spicy elements, but also a range of other flavors, including sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami.

Locals in Maluku and the rest of Eastern Indonesia, especially those living by the water, enjoy certain dishes like Papeda.

Getting to Morotai & Getting around

The airport closest to Morotai is the Ternate Airport in the Indonesian province of North Maluku. It is also called the Sultan Babullah Airport, after an Indonesian warrior. When you get to Ternate, you can take a boat from Daruba: Geovani to Moratai every Wednesday and Friday. Each of these vessels, which make their way back to Ternate the following night, has a limited number of fan-cooled or air-conditioned cabins.

On lower decks, there are also a lot of less expensive sleeping spaces available.

Small aircraft occasionally travel between Ternate and Morotai but weather conditions or sluggish ticket sales may cause these services to be canceled.

Alternately, you can take a ferry or small boat (pronounced “spid”) from Tobelo to Daruba, the main town of Morotai, “taxiing” from Sofifi to Ternate first.

Once you make it to Morotai there are several places you can rent a motorbike from but it is also easy to rent a car with a driver or simply catch an Indonesian rickshaw (becaks).
