Bandung Guide

Once the capital of Indonesia, Bandung is now the capital of the Indonesian province of West Java, which is on the island of Java.  Its nickname, kota kembang, “the city of flowers,” dates back to the Dutch colonial era. The Dutch at the time preferred the city’s natural setting as their getaway destination to help them unwind and has remained that way long after they left.

Bandungs reputation for its many outlet malls stems from the colonial era,  some Dutch called it “Parijs van Java” (Paris of Java) and was even a fashion hub back then. In terms of Indonesian culture, Bandung is a major hub. Sundanese is spoken as a first language by a large percentage of the population in the province of West Java and is the de facto language of everyday life.

Standard Indonesian, as is the case throughout the country, is the language of official business and communication, as well as the language of instruction in universities and other institutions of higher learning.

Bandung has three different areas that people like to visit. The Jl Braga area has a row of cafes and restaurants, and there are markets and museums all around it.

The Jl Cihampelas district, also known as the “Jeans Street” area, has discount stores and a lot of hotels.

However, the most upscale part of town is in the greener north, where Jl Sultan Tirtayasa and Jl Trunojoyo are filled with the city’s newest and trendiest restaurants.

There aren’t many cheap hotels, but there are a lot of online deals for high-end hotels. The main part of Jl Braga is full of cafes and restaurants, but the fanciest places in the city are to the north.

The night warungs on Jl Cikapundung Borat are great places to eat on a budget. They are right across from the alun-alun (main public square). Once the sun goes down in Bandung, there is a wide variety of activities that one can partake in.

You could, for example, go to one of the local bars in Bandung, such as Troy’s, La Baraga, or Holywings, and watch some live music there. Devour the food that is sold by street vendors on the sidewalks of Jalan Setiabudi, Cibadak, and Sudirman Street. Visit Beer Garden, Beerpoint, or Tambuhak to sample some local and international beers of exceptional quality, and don’t forget to check out WODKA Kitchen & Bar!

Take some time for yourself and treat yourself to a soothing spa treatment.  Karaoke nights can be found at Diva, Nav, and Studio Ciwalk, among other places.  And if you still can’t sleep, get your body moving to the beats that some of the local DJs are spinning.

Good to Know

Safety - Friendly & Safe

The crime rate is quite low compared to other mega-cities in the world. Of course, like in any other place in the world where lots of people mingle, there is always the odd scam going on, and some might try to take advantage to make an extra buck on you. But even the poorest people in Bandung are very friendly and optimistic. It is nevertheless wise to go in groups rather than alone, whether it is day or night.

Getting to Bandung & Getting around

From Bali, the journey to Bandung takes either 19 hours by vehicle or 2 hours by plane. Bandung International Airport (Husein Sastranegara) is a major international airport that serves the greater Bandung metropolitan area in West Java, Indonesia. Domestic and international flights are currently processed through the same terminal, but construction of a second terminal  is underway. International visitors from many countries can also obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at the airport.

Approximately 4.8 kilometers (or 2.4 miles) separate the airport from the heart of Bandung, to the north-west.

Online motorbike and taxi services Go-Jek and Grab as well as regular taxis such as Blue Bird operate in Bandung and are the most convenient way to travel.

General Vibe - Dynamic

Bandung is the capital of the province of West Java and, with a population of 2.6 million, the fourth-largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta, Surabaya, and Medan.

Greater Bandung (Bandung Raya) is the name for the city’s metropolitan area, which includes the cities of Bandung and Cimahi as well as three regencies (Bandung, West Bandung and Sumedang).

Bandung Municipality spans 167 square kilometers and is made up of 30 districts with a total of 151 subdistricts. It’s thriving cultural, touristic, industrial, and academic sectors help make it one of Indonesia’s top cities.

Technologies used in aviation, telecommunications, automobile production, and heavy industry are just a few examples.

Bandung is home to three major state-owned companies in the defense, railways, and aviation industries, and it is also part of the global airplane and helicopter industrial cluster.

Many people from Jakarta and the surrounding areas visit Bandung because it has cooler weather all year and a variety of places to visit and do business.

This, along with the constant rise in population, made it hard to build enough public transportation and a well-organized way to control traffic.

Once the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train project is completed, increasing the number of people coming to the city, the situation is expected to worsen.

The 142.3-kilometer rail link, whose construction was stopped due to the pandemic but is scheduled to resume in 2023, will have an estimated train speed of 200 to 350 kilometers per hour. There will be a thirty-six-minute reduction in the current three- to five-hour travel time between the two major hubs.

Bandung Weather

Tropical & Hot

Since it is so close to the equator, it makes sense that Bandung, Indonesia, would experience a tropical monsoon climate. You can always take a dip in the hotel pool, go shopping at any mall, or sip an ice tea at one of the many air-conditioned cafes in the area.

Prices - Great Value for money

Not everything in Bandung is incredibly cheap, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the value you get at hotels, bars, clubs, and upscale restaurants.
